To: Ron Velarde, Issue Raised By: Bailey Franklin and Darby Finley (Area 6 staff) CC: to Colorado Wildlife Commission. Subject: DE012E1R rifle buck hunt. From: Jerry Farringer, CSMLA Wildlife Director, for the CSMLA Board of Directors Date: December 16, 2007 The Colorado State Muzzle Loading Association is opposed to moving the early Flat Tops high-country hunt to an earlier date. The original intent of the early high-country hunt is provide a limited number of hunters with an unique experience. However, the rationale presented to move the season to September is not supported by the information given. We assume that the 2007 hunt information for the area is now available and will be made available. Based on the 2006 hunt data, there can be no conclusion made. Seven hunters didn't harvest an animal but three people didn't care enough to utilize the early hunt opportunity. There certainly could be conflicts between rifle hunters and the archery/muzzle loader hunters. Safety is definitely a concern. We recommend that the hunt continue as is for at least five years. This is a minimum amount of time to get any reliable information. If that is not an option, we recommend the hunt be discontinued.
